Judge Dredd: Case Files 05.2 — The Road to the Apocalypse War

Three stories, one slow march toward Mega-City One’s darkest hour

This volume collects three stories from the classic 2000 AD run, and it’s a bit of an uneven ride — but the destination makes the journey worthwhile.

Hot Dog Run

The collection opens strong. Hot Dog Run follows a group of rookie Judges on their mandatory survival exercise in the Cursed Earth — no backup, no safety net, just wasteland and whatever wants to kill you.

Block Mania

Then comes Block Mania — technically a prelude, and it reads like one. Mega-City One’s apartment blocks go to war with each other in increasingly absurd street battles, and while there’s fun to be had in the chaos, the story feels more like setup than substance. It’s doing important narrative work, seeding the conflict that explodes in the next act.

Apocalypse War

And then the Apocalypse War hits.

This is the story the whole volume has been building toward — a full-scale Soviet invasion of Mega-City One by the forces of East-Meg One. For its era, the ambition is genuinely impressive. Cities nuked. Hundreds of millions dead. Dredd making decisions that would haunt a lesser comic for decades.
